The hardest part of software is no longer writing it. by Andreas Horn @LinkedIn
AI tools have made generating code virtually effortless, shifting the main bottleneck of software development from producing code to verifying, reviewing, and maintaining it.
- The Shift in Bottlenecks: AI has drastically collapsed the time it takes to go from an idea to a working prototype. However, the constraint is no longer “can we build it?” but “can we still understand and reason about what we built?”
- Verification Debt: Saving time during code generation creates a backlog of future effort needed to comprehend, test, and debug that code—often at critical moments.
- The New High-Value Skill: The most critical capability for developers and builders now is not raw code output, but the ability to define quality, review AI-generated output, test effectively, and make intentional tradeoffs.
- Real-World Evidence: Success in shipping profitable products comes from disciplined evaluation, review, and testing, rather than speed of generation alone.
