Emerging Expertise, Tacit Knowledge

excellent presentation:

How to Emerge @ InfoQ
by Dave Thomas on Jul 02, 2015
"Dave Thomas keynotes on how people approach emerging technologies, many embracing the new in spite of its shortcoming, proposing to find a balance between the new and the old."

Challenge and difficulty with flood of new and changing technologies
is caused by FEAR: of the unknown, of committing, of failure
More tools does not help.
To be effective one needs "tacit knowledge", "expertise"
And to get this knowledge, to learn, one needs to keep trying new things and keep failing and improving.

"TOOLS DO NOT MAKE THE WRITER.
THE WRITER IS ALREADY THERE. JUST WAITING TO EMERGE.

TACIT KNOWLEDGE:
  • Integration of experience
  • We do it without thinking
  • We use it without thinking
  • "AUTOPILOT"
  • Not conscious of using lower levels
  • Lose effectiveness of higher levels if you think about lower levels.
"Hard Way" is only way to really learn.
PLANNED, DIRECTED EXPERIENCE WITH LOTS OF MISTAKES
Take chances, make mistakes, get messy
Because then you, not your tools, are in control

IoT app: Traffic Lights

BMWs Now Know Exactly When That Red Light Is Going To Change | Co.Exist | ideas + impact

"EnLighten, also available as a smartphone app, connects to the traffic signal network in compatible cities and predicts the behavior of traffic lights. It does this by talking to new Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) systems which are being installed on roadways by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This gives the car (or the app) information about a city’s traffic management, which it combines with its knowledge of your car’s speed and location (using GPS)."
